The first wood spirit I carvedHaving only started a few months ago, I am a total novice at wood carving but this hobby is so awesome I thought I would share how I got started in it.

I have worked with wood for quite some time now mostly building outdoor furnature and cabinates but never carving. I was in a local bookstore looking for a project book when I stumbled across "Illustrated Guide To Carving Tree Bark: Jensen". After I took this little gem home and read it from cover to cover I was intrigued and wanted to explore it a bit further. One of the links in the book led me to the people at Chipping away. From them I ordered the DVD "Bark Carving Made Easy" by Tony Wispinski.

This DVD really helped. It walked me through the process of carving wood spirits. I got some advice on the type of tools needed from "Pops" at Chipping Away and ordered a basic #1, #2 and a detail set of palm chisels as well as a basic carving knife. And I got a good supply of cottonwood bark from ebay. From here I was set to go.

Well I didn't make a masterpiece by any means. However, for my first attempt I am pleased. I will keep this little guy to remind me where it all started from.

my second wood spiritThe one pictured to the right was the second piece I carved. I was able to get a bit better definition of the face. It seems like every time I pick up a knife I learn from it. This one I gave to my mother for christmas.

my first little gnomeThe little gnome on the left came next and now resides on my wife's desk. She calls him Pop's and said he reminds her of her father.

Another creation on the left. He found a home at my sister in-law's house. I have done several more since then and every one I learn something new. I know I need to work on the basics a bit like noses, eyes and mouths. If any experienced carvers have any suggestions please feel free to comment.

My next project will be some whimsical houses! When I get some done I'll post the pictures here or create a gallery section.

Happy Chipping,
Tracy
